How to Adjust Your Skincare Routine for the Changing Seasons

Every time a new season comes around, your skin probably reacts to the changes in the air. You may notice more breakouts, dryness, and redness during certain seasons. We can help you avoid this problem by teaching you how to adjust your skincare routine. When the seasons change, you can be prepared to care for your skin to combat the changing weather conditions.

Create a Skincare Routine

If you haven’t already done this, now is the time to create a skincare routine. It is important to establish a baseline routine for your skin, so you know how to adjust it during the changing seasons. Your skincare routine should help your skin thrive with premium products that work for you.

Your skincare routine can consist of the following products:

  • Cleansers
  • Moisturizers
  • Serums
  • Eye creams
  • Masks
  • Lip treatments
  • Exfoliators

These products will target different skin concerns to bring a radiant glow to your complexion. It takes some trial and error to nail down the perfect skincare routine at first. However, with patience and high-quality skincare products, you will achieve your dream skin.

Order of Application

Each person’s skincare routine is a little different. There are some general guidelines you should follow to make sure your products absorb into your skin. Generally, you want to layer your products from thinnest to thickest.

A common suggestion in the skincare world for product application goes in this order:

  1. Cleanser or makeup remover
  2. Toner
  3. Spot treatments
  4. Serum
  5. Moisturizer
  6. Eye cream
  7. Face oil
  8. Sunscreen (during the day)

These products will likely absorb best when applied in this order. However, your morning and night routines might look a little different. Continue to adjust your product application until you find what works for your skin.

Define Your Skincare Goals

Your custom skincare routine depends on the goals you have for your skin. Make a list of the skin concerns you want to address with your new routine. Do you have acne-prone skin? Are you suffering from extreme dryness and rough skin texture? Would you like to brighten and even your skin tone?

These are examples of common skin concerns that your skincare routine can improve for you. When choosing the products you want to use, research the ingredients to make sure they will be effective for your skin problems.

Seasonal Skincare

Now that you have a foundation for your skin’s care and maintenance, it’s time to talk about seasonal skincare. Your skin has different needs in different weather conditions. In some climates, the weather changes drastically from season to season. You want to be prepared to handle the unique challenges each season brings to your skin.

We will detail the best skincare practices for each season, but first, consider your location. For example, if you live near the equator, you should tailor your skincare routine to address hot weather, sweating, and humidity.

Once you learn how to manage your skin in your climate, you can make adjustments as the seasons change. Keep your local weather conditions in mind as you learn how to create the perfect custom skincare routine.

Summer Skincare

When it comes to summer skincare, it’s all about sun protection and cleansing. Hot weather comes with lots of sweat, dirt, and debris in your pores. Instead of packing on tons of products in the summer, try keeping your skincare routine minimal.

For Dry Skin

If you have dry skin, you should use gentle, oil-based cleansers in the summer. The oil will prevent your skin from drying out, and the cleansing agents will remove grease from your pores. You can still thoroughly cleanse your skin without stripping it of its natural moisture.

Lightweight moisturizers will be your best friend in the summer. Choose water-based moisturizers or skin mists that add a layer of hydration to your skin without blocking your pores. You can use heavier moisturizing creams at night to keep your skin moist and soft.

In general, if you have dry skin, you should stay hydrated and protected from sun exposure. Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day and wear sunscreen at all times. Sun exposure can burn and dry out your skin.

For Oily Skin

Oily skin can be tricky to manage in the summertime. You may have to exfoliate your skin multiple times a week to keep your pores clear of dirt and sweat. Exfoliation removes dead skin and buildup to keep your skin clear, matte, and fresh.

You should still use a lightweight, water-based moisturizer in the summer, even if you have oily skin. If your skin starts to dry out, it starts overproducing oils to combat the dryness. This will only make your skin oilier and harder to manage.

Clarifying face masks can deep-clean your pores and renew your skin. If you struggle with an excess of face oil, try a mud or clay mask to refresh your skin. These are most effective when used at night – after you’re done sweating for the day.

Fall Skincare

The autumn season can bring dry air and cooler weather. This shift in humidity means your custom skincare routine should be extra moisturizing during the fall. Seasons changing can strip your skin of moisture during this time of the year, so it’s best to be prepared.

Whether you have dry or oily skin, you should use a moisturizer with hydrating ingredients. Check the ingredients for hyaluronic acid and glycerin, two very hydrating compounds that lock moisture into your skin.

Heating systems, chilly fall air, and being indoors a lot can all suck the moisture out of your skin. Consider investing in a humidifier for your bedroom, office, or any other room you occupy a lot during your time at home or work. This will keep your skin moist throughout the day.

Illuminating masks and serums can bring life to your skin during the colder months of the year. If dry autumn air is too harsh on your skin, pack on the moisturizing products.

Winter Skincare

Your custom skincare routine for the winter season will probably look a lot like your fall routine. Winter brings harsh, freezing wind and dry indoor environments. Moisturizers and hydrating face oils are your best friend during winter. Oils will lock in a layer of moisture under your skin to protect it from the bitter wind.

If you have oily skin, avoid the urge to use harsh cleansers and excessive exfoliation in the winter months. Your skin can become too dry and rough, causing uncomfortable cracks in your skin. Use a clarifying cleanser to get the sweat, grease, and dirt out from inside your pores.

The drier your skin normally is, the more moisturization it will need during cold winters. Even oily skin will need hydration to avoid drying out, which could prompt your skin to produce even more oil. Focus on nourishment and hydration for your skin in the wintertime.

Spring Skincare

Spring is a tricky season in which to care for your skin. Most people think that because the sky is cloudy, they don’t need facial SPF at all. However, damaging UV rays can still penetrate through clouds and harm your skin. The most important product you can keep in your spring skincare routine is facial sunscreen.

Depending on where you live, the air could be humid enough to switch to a lightweight moisturizer again. If you have dry skin, you should keep at least one thick moisturizing product in your collection to combat rough texture. Oily skin might only tolerate a thin layer of water-based moisturizer.

There is lots of rain during the spring in some places around the world. This, however, does not substitute a good face mist. Use a hydrating face mist in the spring to keep your skin refreshed and moist throughout the day.
